Jelle van deN Akker
Meet Jelle, the Founder and CEO of SmartFarming BV. He holds an impressive experience in collaborating with smallholder farmers, NGOs, and developmental agencies on agricultural projects. His expertise lies in blending agronomy, remote sensing technologies, and software to offer real-time agricultural insights, fostering sustainable agrifood systems. He holds an esteemed MSc Organic Agriculture degree from Wageningen University & Research.
He firmly believes in the profound impact of real-time data and the dissemination of agricultural information on driving sustainable agriculture forward.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Jelle finds joy in traveling, reading, socialising, and embracing new connections.
Wouter Beekman
Wouter is a Director of SmartFarming B.V residing in the Netherlands. He has great expertise in irrigation and hydrology and seeks to expand this (research) portfolio to the other East-African offices.
With SmartFarming, he mainly focuses on the PHITO project to develop digital App for farmers in the European Union.
nelson marula
Meet Nelson, our talented digital project manager residing in Mozambique, Africa. With expertise in GIS and data, he excels in data collection, analysis, and storage. Nelson's role extends to engaging with stakeholders, ensuring a seamless collaboration. He dedicates his efforts to the successful management of IRIPO, our communication platform delivering essential digital agricultural extension services. Nelson's diligent work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills make him a valuable asset, fostering strong connections within and beyond the working environment. We are thrilled to have Nelson on our team, driving impactful projects and making a difference in the world of agriculture.
Hans BAKKER
Hans is our experienced product owner facilitating App development by liaising between technology, business, and user groups in an Agile way of working. He has previously worked as a product owner and data scientist in corporate sustainability advisory projects to design, build and deploy digital solutions in the palm oil industry. Hans has a background in development economics and machine learning.
In his free time he is an avid runner, hiker, and nature photographer.
Abigail Asamoah Sarpong
Meet Abigail Asamoah Sarpong, our Digital Agricultural Expert . With a background in development economics and holding an MSc in Management and Economics from Wageningen University & Research, she specializes in employing a User-Centered Approach to develop cutting-edge data collection and management systems, data analyses, and dashboard development, ensuring the success of developmental projects. Abigail's passion for applying technology in agriculture to foster sustainable food systems and her dedication to teamwork, determination, and hard work make her a valuable asset to the team. In her leisure time, Abigail enjoys expanding her skillset, indulging in music, reading, and exploring her culinary talents in the kitchen.
Alessandra Cossu
Alessandra is our Digital Impact and Data Analysis Expert, with a strong background in data modeling, application development, and stakeholder engagement. Holding an MSc in Plant Sciences specializing in Natural Resources Management, she is currently involved in developing a state-of-the-art data collection tool using a User-Centered Design approach, emphasizing active stakeholder involvement. Her passion for collaboration, teamwork, and diverse perspectives fuels her success in the field. Outside of work, Alessandra enjoys exploring ocean waves, skateboarding, and sharing delicious meals with friends.
Avani Thakore
Avani is internationally experienced in the fields of financial management, internal controls, compliance & reporting. Being a CPA license holder from AICPA USA, she is the subject matter expert as a Financial Project Manager for SmartFarming. She manages and oversees financial policies, processes, analysis, reporting, financial audit and accountability for SmartFarming projects worldwide. Avani is the financial focal and advisory point on all major project financial matters during the planning, budgeting, operational and reporting phases.
Ângela Ângelo Chico
Ângela holds a degree in Geography from Eduardo Mondlane University, specializing in Planning and Regional and Rural Development. She has extensive experience in community engagement and development, focusing on gender and protection. Ângela has worked with organizations like Fundação Seppa and Girl Move Academy, developing and implementing strategies for community mobilization and gender protection. Her expertise and commitment to empowering communities make her a valuable asset to the SmartFarming team.
Melissa Guizado
Melissa is an Information and Telecommunication Engineer working as FMIS (Farmer Management Information Systems) Specialist supporting with data analyses and collection and developing new technological systems to improve support system for farmers.
jessica nuboer
Jessica is working towards her MSc in Agroecology at Wageningen University & Research. She had a BA degree at the University of Amsterdam. Along with her extensive background in marketing for sustainable technology and her passion for all things plants and soil related, she gives a unique perspective to building awareness for sustainable farm management. She supports SmartFarming with marketing and enhances our social media outreach
Diamuleto Banze
Diamuleto is an Agritech specialist with expertise in remote sensing, GIS, and two-way communication platforms. Based in Pemba, he has contributed to projects like SmartCane, using satellite imagery to monitor crops and provide actionable insights. He also specializes in IVR and SMS systems, ensuring smallholder farmers receive timely information on weather, markets, and best practices. His innovative approach enhances communication and decision-making, driving sustainability and efficiency in Mozambique’s agricultural sector.
victoria Lefèvre
Victoria is specialized in agribusiness and renewable energy. Based in Pemba, she is currently working on the Agrovida project as a Digital Agriculture Expert, where she supports partner collaboration, qualitative data collection, and digital innovation for market access.
She is an agronomist with a background in Environmental Sciences and Global Change and has previously contributed to the development of weather and climate information services tools for the agricultural sector.
Outside of work, Victoria enjoys spending time with friends, exploring the treasures of the sea, and playing football.

Daniel's expertise lies in navigating the intricacies of technology introduction, fostering innovation, conducting experiments, and compelling value propositions, among other essential processes.Throughout his career, Daniel has fostered meaningful connections between people and technology across continents, leaving a positive impact on South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Geronimo is our Digital Innovations in Agriculture Officer specializing in irrigation and water management. As an expert in this field, his mission is to lead the agricultural sector's transformation by championing innovative solutions that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and productivity of farming practices. He actively involves in various developmental and sustainable projects. His enthusiasm extends beyond the tasks at hand, as he fosters strong bonds with his team members and external stakeholders.
