Meet the Team
Our team consists of academically trained experts in agronomy, data analytics, remote sensing, digital solutions, user experience, and product development. Leveraging our deep understanding of agricultural practices and cutting-edge digital technologies, we develop robust solutions tailored to the specific needs of our farmers.
Jelle van deN Akker
Meet Jelle, Founder and CEO of SmartFarming BV. He has strong experience working with smallholder farmers, NGOs, and development agencies, combining agronomy, remote sensing, and software to deliver real-time insights for more sustainable agriculture. He holds an MSc in Organic Agriculture from Wageningen University & Research.
Jelle is passionate about using data to improve farming, and in his free time, he enjoys travelling, reading, and connecting with people.
Wouter Beekman
Wouter is a Director of SmartFarming B.V residing in the Netherlands. He has great expertise in irrigation and hydrology and seeks to expand this (research) portfolio to the other East-African offices.
With SmartFarming, he mainly focuses on the PHITO project to develop digital App for farmers in the European Union.
nelson marula
Meet Nelson, our Digital Project Manager based in Mozambique. With strong expertise in GIS and data, he leads data collection, analysis, and management while working closely with stakeholders to ensure smooth collaboration. He also oversees IRIPO, our platform delivering key digital agricultural extension services.
Nelson’s dedication and strong people skills make him a valuable part of the team, helping drive impactful projects in agriculture.
Hans BAKKER
Hans is our experienced product owner facilitating App development by liaising between technology, business, and user groups in an Agile way of working. He has previously worked as a product owner and data scientist in corporate sustainability advisory projects to design, build and deploy digital solutions in the palm oil industry. Hans has a background in development economics and machine learning.
In his free time he is an avid runner, hiker, and nature photographer.
Abigail Sarpong
Meet Abigail, our Digital Agricultural Expert. With a background in development economics, she specialises in designing user-centered data collection and management systems, analysing data and building interactive dashboards to support agricultural and development projects.
She is passionate about using technology and data to improve decision-making, strengthen project outcomes, and contribute to more sustainable and efficient food systems.
Alessandra Cossu
Alessandra is our Digital Impact and Data Analysis Expert, with a background in data modelling, app development, and stakeholder engagement. She holds an MSc in Plant Sciences (Natural Resources Management) and works on building user-centered data collection tools with strong stakeholder involvement.
She enjoys collaboration and bringing diverse perspectives into her work, and outside of work, she loves the ocean, skateboarding, and sharing meals with friends.
Avani Thakore
Avani is our Financial Project Manager, with international experience in financial management, compliance, and reporting. As a CPA licensed by AICPA (USA), she oversees financial processes, analysis, audits, and accountability across SmartFarming projects.
She also serves as the key advisor on financial matters throughout project planning, budgeting, implementation, and reporting.
Ângela Ângelo Chico
Ângela is a Gender Expert with a degree in Geography, specializing in Planning and Rural Development. She has strong experience in community engagement, gender, and protection, having worked with organizations like Fundação Seppa and Girl Move Academy.
Her dedication to community empowerment makes her a valuable part of the SmartFarming team.
Melissa Guizado
Melissa is an Information and Telecommunication Engineer and an FMIS (Farmer Management Information Systems) Specialist. She supports data collection and analysis while developing new technological systems to strengthen support for farmers. Her work focuses on improving how data is used to enhance decision-making and overall farm management.
naima karimo
Naima, our Digital Agriculture and Irrigation Technician holds a degree in Agriculture with a focus on Agricultural Extension and has strong experience supporting rural communities to improve production and organisation.
She has worked on agroforestry, vegetable production, irrigation systems, and strengthening small businesses and savings groups. Naima is passionate about transforming family farming and creating lasting impact.
Diamuleto Banze
Diamuleto is an Agritech Specialist based in Pemba, with expertise in remote sensing, GIS, and communication platforms. He works with satellite data and IVR/SMS systems to deliver timely insights on crops, weather, and markets to smallholder farmers ensuring they receive timely information.
His work supports better decision-making and promotes more sustainable and efficient agriculture in Mozambique.
victoria Lefèvre
Victoria is a Digital Agriculture Expert with a background in agronomy, environmental sciences, and global change. She works on Agrovida project, supporting partnerships, data collection, and digital solutions for market access.
She also has experience developing weather and climate information tools for agriculture. Outside work, she enjoys spending time with friends, the sea, and playing football.
