My Crop Care App

The Indian coffee industry has earned international acclaim, given its 16 distinct coffee varieties sourced from 13 unique regions, mainly in the southern part of the country. Recognizing the importance of capacity building and knowledge on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) for coffee farmers, SmartFarming BV collaborated with the Rainforest Alliance and the Western Gaths Sustainable Farming Consortium, a group of Indian coffee producers, to develop the MyCropCare App. This App aims to promote sustainable coffee farming practices among smallholder coffee growers and facilitate the dissemination of valuable information.

MyCropCare is a versatile App that offers farmers personalized and timely advice on agricultural practices specific to their farms. With features like irrigation and fertilizer calculation tools, support for local languages, offline accessibility, day-to-day tailored advice, crop stress identification through pictures, weather forecasts, and a yield estimation tool for coffee estates, the App equips farmers with the necessary tools for sustainable coffee production.

Presently, the App is being used in Karnataka, a region with a medium to high literacy rate and a high number of farmers owning smartphones. The App’s user-centered design approach involved active participation from farmers during its development, ensuring its usability and relevance.

Thanks to the My Crop Care App, farmers can now access crucial agricultural knowledge and tools right at their fingertips, even in areas with limited connectivity. The App’s picture-based pest and disease identification tool, pest management guidelines, fertilizer calculator, and yield estimation tool, provide farmers with comprehensive support for their daily farming activities, taking into account local conditions and individual preferences. By empowering coffee farmers with this App, it enables them to adopt sustainable practices, enhance productivity, and contribute to the health of their land.

Neelkant Pandhare from the Rainforest Alliance’s India Team expressed, “This App significantly expands our reach to more coffee farmers in South India, putting the information they need right in the palm of their hands.” The My Crop Care App is freely available for download on the Google App store, welcoming all farmers, whether Rainforest Alliance Certified or not, to join the journey towards sustainability.
